The competition proposal is aimed at assessing the impact of the increased climate warming present in urban areas in Thessaloniki and proposes the strategic placement of vegetation and “green” infrastructure (green roofs, tree rows, green walls, etc.) as a way to improve the local microclimate and reduce the impact of climate change.
The project slogan, O2 = Olives + Oranges, was created by combining the initial letters of the local Greek fruit – Olives and Oranges – which together create O2, the chemical symbol for oxygen. Oxygen can be interpreted as the driver of life, the opposite of CO2 (carbon dioxide). That is, olives and oranges provide a symbolic and cultural meaning that establishes notions of resilience and prosperity. The project itself envisages the planting of olive trees along the footpaths, and orange trees on the main squares.
The main motive of this work is the revival of the neglected urban fabric by creating an environment that will stimulate social interactions and creativity, contributing to the creation of a healthy lifestyle. This was achieved by forming a horizontal and vertical network of open urban spaces consisting of a series of streets, squares, green podiums, and raised platforms.
